AMINO ACIDS are the building blocks of proteins. In addition to serving as structural materials in all living organisms, Amino acids are involved in such diverse functions as metabolic regulation, transport, defense, and catalysis. Of the 23 amino acids known to be important for humans, Amino acids like Phenylalanine, Valine, Threonine, Tryptophan, Isoleucine, Methionine, Leucine, Lysine, Arginine, Histidine are called as Essential Amino acids. These Essential Amino acids cannot be synthesized by the body in adequate quantities to meet the daily requirement and therefore they should be supplied from outside. If one of these Amino acids is supplied in an amount lower than is needed, the total amount of body protein that can be synthesized from the others will be limited. Similarly in the absence or deficiency of an essential Amino acid the body’s ability to synthesize proteins gets limited. The other 13 Amino acids, termed as ‘Non- essential’, are synthesized by the body in the presence of essential Amino acids or energy nutrients and a nitrogen source.
Thus Amino acids are a vital part of nutrition and are associated with numerous functions in the human body. In fact, there are over 1,600 basic proteins in the body, and all of them are created from unique combinations of amino acids. Any deficiency of Amino acids would adversely affect the smooth functioning of the human body. Amino acids not only catalyze all (or most) of the reactions in living cells, they control virtually all cellular process.
Vitamins are organic nutrients which are essential for life. The human body requires these nutrients to ensure normal metabolism, growth and physical well-being. Most vitamins are not made in the body, or only in insufficient amounts to meet our needs.
Vitamins are classed as micronutrients, and are present in food in minute quantities compared to macronutrients (protein, carbohydrates and fat). Each of the 13 vitamins known today has specific functions in the body, which makes each of them unique and irreplaceable. No single food contains the full range of vitamins, and inadequate vitamin intake results in vitamin deficiency disorders. Therefore, Vitamins need to be supplemented from outside to maintain optimal well being.
Minerals are basically the spark plugs of life, or keystones to good health. Minerals compose about 4% of the human body. Like Vitamins, our body cannot produce minerals and hence should be obtained through food/ supplements.
They are essential nutrients that the body needs to survive and carry out daily functions and processes. Minerals have key roles in several body functions viz energy production, boosting the immunity, nerves and skeletal muscle.
